Rapid multi-physics simulation for electro-thermal origami systems

Electro-thermally actuated origami provides a novel method for creating 3-D systems with advanced morphing and functional capabilities. However, it is currently difficult to simulate the multi-physical behavior of such because electro-thermal actuation large folding deformations are highly interdependent. In this work, we introduce rapid multi-physics simulation framework electro-thermally that can simultaneously capture: thermo-mechancially coupled actuation, inter panel contact, heat transfer, deformation folding, other complex loading applied onto origami. Comparisons finite element models validate proposed simulating transfer different system geometries, materials, surrounding environments. Verification simulated behaviors against physical micro-origami further demonstrates validity model. Simulations more patterns case study optimization provided as application examples show capability efficiency The tool analysis, design, control, active systems, pushing boundary feasible shape capability.
